“learning and developing skills whilst having fun with performing arts”
Introduction
Lutterworth Youth Theatre Academy Limited is a company concerned with ensuring that the Children of Lutterworth, and the surrounding villages, have an opportunity to develop their skills through attending weekly classes, linked to the performing arts, throughout the school term times. Our primary objective is,
“developing life skills in young people”
We believe that drama and music should be taught in a fun atmosphere where learning and development is a fun process. This prospectus deals with the specific element of drama.
Drama is a vocational activity that allows an individual to grow in confidence, build self esteem as well as creating a performance. Drama classes are certainly not only for students who wish to become actors or performers. There are several class types that we hold at the centre which are designed with ensuring that there is something for everybody.
“What is Drama but life with the dull bits taken out”. - Alfred Hitchcock
These are starter classes for children aged 6 to 10 years and are conducted in our Drama Studio. The lessons are designed to allow students to learn how to act with others, and to grow in confidence by being able to express themselves through drama role play, use of props, drama games and interaction. There are three classes held each week and these are ideally suited as after school activities. The students will have the opportunity to use scripts and from time to time, parents and/or guardians will have the opportunity to see the students perform small showcases. It is stressed, however, that this class has not been designed as a performance class, but a fun activity session where everyone can enjoy being involved.
Performance Examinations in Drama Classes
L.A.M.D.A is the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
LAMDA is one of the leading drama schools in the English-speaking world and conducts the most eminent set of public examinations in speech and drama.
It was formed in 1861, making the Academy the oldest of its kind in Britain, with a long-established reputation for excellence. Providing training for, and examinations in, various musical disciplines was originally the dominant purpose of the institution. However, providing instruction in spoken English quickly became a core area of the Academy’s work.
In the 1880s, LAMDA began offering speech examinations to the public. Since then, these examinations have been refined and developed into a comprehensive system of performance evaluation. LAMDA Examinations has emerged as the largest Speech and Drama Board in the United Kingdom, with an international reputation.
Through this Organisation the Centre Offers graded lessons (grades 1 to 8), just in the same way that student's can, for example, achieve grades in Piano.
Lutterworth Performing Arts Centre is registered as a L.A.M.D.A examination centre, which means that once students are ready to be examined they will have their exam held here, at the Centre, by London adjudicators.
We run several hours of one hour classes here at the Performing Arts Centre each week for students aged 8 and over. Adult graded classes are available.
When students are enrolled they are assessed over the course of four weeks to ascertain the grade at which they should be studying for. They are then placed in the appropriate peer group for their ability. There is no specific time-scale to the examination timetable. Students will be entered for examinations when they are considered ready to attain a pass. Exam entry fees will be payable by the student or parent/guardian of student.
Once again, it is stressed that these are not performance classes, but are specifically held with a view to the students achieving benchmark progress through examinations. This said, they are designed in the spirit of the school, in that students will certainly have fun whilst they are studying and developing their skills.
Once the student achieves grade six of the examination board process then this level qualifies for UCAS points, which can be useful for students that are going on to further education through university. The grades are also universally recognised for students that may wish to pursue a career in performing arts.
It is equally important to understand that the underlying value of these lessons and achievements are to help the student to gain confidence in themselves and to build upon their own value of self worth.
Private Individual Coaching
These are one to one development classes with a specific result to be achieved. These sessions are particularly useful for audition preparation, performance role characterisation, vocal and accent work or simply confidence building sessions where specific issues can be discussed and addressed such as bullying. These coaching sessions are available from ages 6 years to adult.
Adult Drama Workshop 1
This one hour per week adult class is for students over the age of 17 years who wish to explore drama as a way to build confidence, self esteem and inter-personal skills. It is also
a fun session which allows the student to learn more about themselves and the way that the world sees them, whilst interacting with others.
This class also studies body language, voice projection and basic script formation. This is not a performance class, but there will be an option for the group, once established to hold adhoc showcases on prepared pieces of work.
Adult Drama Workshop 2
This two hour adult class is for students over the age of 17 years who are returning to or are new to drama. The workshop explores and develops skills in acting, voice projection and body language, with a view to creating a small bespoke production/performance.
It will specifically look at the extremes of emotion in drama scripts, from the very serious to the very humorous.
Adult Masterclass 2
This is two hour adult class for students that have been identified as having the core skills and attributes to develop into potential drama teachers of the future. This masterclass is by invitation only.
